DISCOVER AUTOMATIC CAR PARKING SYSTEMS WITH WOHR

The automated car parking system is an idea whose time has come! Across Indian cities and around the world, urban planners and real estate developers are increasingly turning to automated parking systems to provide more parking spaces in limited land.

While we may think automated parking systems are a modern phenomenon - it is in fact, a fairly old invention. The earliest use of an APS was in Paris, France in 1905 at the Garage Rue de Ponthieu. The APS consisted of a ground-breaking multi-story concrete structure with an internal car elevator to transport cars to upper levels where attendants would then park the cars in the vacant space on that level.

WHAT IS AN AUTOMATED CAR PARKING SYSTEM?

It is a mechanical system designed to minimise the area required for parking cars. It is a structure where cars are stacked vertically to maximise parking space and minimise land use. Automated parking systems offer many advantages and come in multiple types and forms.

They can be divided into two broad categories:

Fully automatic: Here, the system does not require an attendant; the system's mechanical process will automatically transport the vehicle from the entry point to the vacant parking space and retrieve it when required.

Semi-automatic: This car parking system requires some action from the driver or an attendant before the mechanical system moves the car to and from its parking space.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Automatic car parking systems use a combination of conveyance devices, computers, sensors and cameras to park and retrieve the vehicle. Similar to a valet parking system but without the valet.

- The automated parking system offers one or multiple bay rooms for depositing/retrieving vehicles.

- The driver enters the bay or ramp and stops at the marked sign. Once positioned properly, the driver shuts down the engine, secures the parking brake and steps out of the car, and exits the site.

- Sensors analyse the vehicle to determine its size and shape.

- The mechanical arms of the system are now set in motion. Depending on the available empty spots in the system, the car is carried to the respective space, using various electro-mechanical components and a shuttle system that moves vertically and horizontally.

The entire process takes hardly 2 minutes. The smart parking system uses RFID or an electronic card/key containing a code that identifies and admits your vehicle during entry, and later locates the car and brings it to you.

In some cases, the system is fitted with a turntable so that the car is brought to you facing in the exit direction. This means that drivers do not need to reverse the car - they can just drive straight out.

WHY ARE AUTOMATED PARKING SYSTEMS SMARTER?

No points for guessing. The advantages of such automated multilevel car parking systems are quite evident. The most obvious is that they fit more cars in the least floor space. Having no access ramps, elevators or stairways, they occupy less space on the ground.

More space is gained from the fact that the cars are stacked much closer together than in traditional parking lots where they require clearance for the doors to open. This feature also serves to provide safety and security against thefts, accidents and vandalism.

Being a fabricated metal structure, you save on construction costs. You also save on fuel consumption (and thereby reduce CO2 emissions!) as you do not require the engine to be running while the car is moved through the building.

These systems are versatile; can be built above or underground as per the space available.

AUTOMATIC PARKING SYSTEMS FROM WOHR

Wohr offers an Automatic Car Parking System: Combiparker 555. Working on the principle of stacking and moving cars closer together, it offers up to 8 levels vertically and up to 7 grids horizontally.

Vehicles are parked in parking levels with specially designed adjustable sliding carrier units. In every second grid, transport lifts ensure the lifting and lowering of vehicles. These grids also serve as entrances and exits.

This cost-effective technology is easy to operate and ideally suited to car service centres, car dealers, car rental companies, commercial and residential buildings.

Wohr's other automatic parking system is a tower parking system: Slimparker 557. Available in tower and shaft variations, this new parking system rises up to 6 levels, each accommodating 4 cars.

Slim construction contours mean a small ground plan and slim installation width of only 280 cm.
